On a Wednesday morning Nate called Paw-Paw bright and early super excited to tell him it was the first day of spring and more importantly, Mace's birthday. We've been looking forward to Mace's birthday for months. We were planning a visit to Georgia the next day, so Nate asked for a birthday party to celebrate the wonderful life of Mace. Lady ordered a cake with a frosting picture of Mace for all of us to enjoy.
Later that night I got a call from Lady telling me Mace had a bloody nose that just wouldn't stop bleeding. Paw-Paw and Lady rushed him to the emergency vet and had him checked out, which is when they found a mass, possibly a tumor inside his sinus cavity. We arrived Thursday night so I got to see my baby dog before we headed to the vet Friday for another checkup. Then on Saturday he had massive nose bleeds three more times and was completely exhausted. We spent the days leading up to today making sure Mace knew how much we all loved him before taking him in to be laid to rest this. It seems like it wasn't that long ago that I was picking him up from the Petsmart animal shelter. I went in there without plans of getting a dog on the spot, but after seeing that fuzzy little black dog I couldn't resist. I filled out the application and took him home that night and changed the lives of so many people, mainly Paw-Paw and Lady. He had the ability to bring out love that you didn't even know you're capable of giving. Despite his notorious bad puppy phase, we couldn't help but love him.
Here we are in the beginning.
Sadly, here we are at the end. I love you so much Mace. Thanks for making this world a better place for the past 11 years.

Mace was literally my baby until the day he died. Here he is at the vet. He climbed right up on his mommy's lap in the waiting area like that's where he belonged.
Thank you, Megan, for the tribute to Mace. He was one great dog and we'll never forget him.
ReplyDeleteI know I'll miss getting attacked with excitement every time I show up at mom's or your house. Best dog I've ever interacted with.

Thanks Megan for the really nice blog for Mace. He was you know the extended Gerken Family dog after his cousin Stan left this world.
